Geology

The rock mined for the Greenwood site comes from the Valley and Ridge Province of Virginia near Winchester. It is an Ordovician Age limestone from 450 to 500 million years ago known as the Lincolnshire Formation. Characteristic to the Lincolnshire is its banded appearance of light and dark gray layers attesting to alternating changes in underwater depositional environments. After solidifying into rock the limestone was pushed up out of the water and far inland from its place of origin when continents collided resulting in the dramatic outcrops and mountains we see today.
