Greene Plant

Initiated in 1983, the Greene Plant is located on Route 29 north of Charlottesville. Over the years the plant has won numerous awards, including the 1995 Greene County Chamber of Commerce Outstanding Contributor Award, 1995 National Stone, Sand & Gravel Association Safety Achievement Award, 1991 Virginia Aggregates Community Impact Award. A supporter of the local fire department and rescue squads, the Greene Plant also sponsors programs with local schools. Greene produces specialized recreational and landscaping products that are used statewide.

Areas Served

The City of Charlottesville, and counties of Greene, Albemarle, and Louisa.

Geology

Greene mines the Robertson River Formation, a Precambrian age (about 570 million years old) granite that is part of the “Virginia Blue Ridge Complex” of igneous and metamorphic rocks. Robertson River is more specifically referred to as hornblende granite, named for the shiny black mineral commonly found in igneous rocks. Its differences in mineralogy from east to west demonstrate how a single formation can undergo dynamic change.
