Geological History
Greene mines the Robertson River Formation, a Precambrian age (about 570 million years old) granite that is part of the “Virginia Blue Ridge Complex” of igneous and metamorphic rocks. Robertson River is more specifically referred to as hornblende granite, named for the shiny black mineral commonly found in igneous rocks. Its differences in mineralogy from east to west demonstrate how a single formation can undergo dynamic change.
