New Kent Environmental Bank
Luck Stone Corporation is pleased to announce the start of our New Kent Environmental Bank, an innovative approach to the complex issue of wetlands permitting.

Our environmental bank contains 680 acres of land devoted to the creation and preservation of streams, wetlands and uplands habitats. The York River Basin is our service area, which includes Spotsylvania, Caroline, King and Queen, King William, and Hanover counties. Portions of the New Kent, James City, Gloucester and York counties are also served.

The U.S Corps of Engineers, the primary authority for wetland related-issues, has approved the use of environmental banks when land containing wetlands are permitted for development. Typically, the Corps authorizes the use of an environmental bank in terms of a “credit” or portion of an acre. For example, a new development may impact 5 wetland acres, and the Corps will allow the developer to purchase 10 environmental bank acres in exchange for building on those wetlands. The Corps also regulates impacted streams, and our environmental bank offers stream credits as well.

There are many benefits to using an environmental bank. With traditional mitigation landowners and developers must negotiate land use, government permitting, design, engineering, resource studies and actual construction, which create uncertainty and delays for a project. Using an authorized bank relieves the developer of these burdens. Our environmental bank provides natural resource credits that replace on-site mitigation, allowing the developer to allocate the land to its most efficient future use or development potential. Luck Stone’s environmental bank will guarantee functional wetlands performance meeting federal and state requirements.

The New Kent Environmental Bank also fits our philosophy regarding our dedication to environmental stewardship. With a host of industry related environmental awards, Luck Stone continues to be active in this important commitment.

Preserving Green Space and Viewsheds
Partnering with Oatlands, Inc.
Luck Stone takes great pride in the numerous community outreach programs it has developed with worthwhile organizations throughout the state. One of our most recent projects is our partnership with the Oatlands Plantation in Northern Virginia. Oatlands is a 330-acre property of the National Trust for Historic Preservation. We became the largest corporate donor to the Campaign to Save Oatlands, which helped the organization purchase 67 acres adjacent to their property that was threatened by development, thereby protecting the scenic integrity of this National Historic Landmark.

James River Cleanup
Luck Stone Corporation has been a proud sponsor of the James River Clean-up for the past four years. We have provided lunch for the volunteers at two cleanup locations and a number of our associates have volunteered their time and boats to support the effort. The cleanup is focused on more than 50 miles of the James, including sites in Chesterfield, Henrico, Powhatan, Goochland and Charles City counties, as well as Richmond and Lynchburg. The James River Advisory Council is heading organizational efforts for the cleanup.

Standard Environmental Practices

  • High pressure water sprays for process dust control
  • Oil/water separator for cleaning grease and oils from equipment. The equipment washing system includes a large concrete wash pad and a closed-loop water recycle system
  • Secondary and tertiary screens are located inside a fully enclosed building to reduce noise and visible emissions
  • At many plants, primary crushers and other equipment are located in pit area to reduce noise
  • Use of a truck wet-down spray system to minimize dust
  • An aggressive revegetation program on berms and other disturbed areas that includes annual application of fertilizer and reseeding as necessary to develop a lush and stable vegetative cover that significantly reduces erosion
  • A non-hazardous parts-cleaning station
  • For energy recovery, Luck Stone burns its own used oil in many of our plants
  • Many electrical circuits, including equipment block heaters, are on computer automated timers to minimize power consumption
  • Associates are routinely trained on environmental, health and safety issues to keep them abreast of new and changing requirements
